Valve Stem and Sensor

Whether you get your used tires from Northwest Tires & Auto Care or somewhere else, we want you to be aware of the valve stem and sensor associated with your tire. Both of these items are very sensitive and could be damaged if the tire technician is not qualified and/or experienced. Here is a description of the valve stem and sensor:

VALVE STEM
A valve stem is a self-contained valve which opens to admit gas to a chamber (such as air to inflate a tire), and is then automatically closed and kept sealed by the pressure in the chamber, or a spring, or both, to prevent the gas from escaping. They are most commonly used on automobile and bicycle wheels, but also for many other applications.

When damaged (see picture above), Valve Stems can leak air as if your tire has a slow leak. Above is a picture of a damaged valve stem that has dried out and leaks air from the cracks. You can check if your valve stem has cracks by flexing the stem as shown in the picture to the right. In addition, during the process of changing a tire, the tire technician can damage the stem if he or she is not aware.

Sensor - A tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is an electronic system designed to monitor the air pressure inside the pneumatic tires on various types of vehicles. TPMS report real-time tire-pressure information to the driver of the vehicle, either via a gauge, a pictogram display, or a simple low-pressure warning light.

Sensors are very delicate and rest on the inside the tire. They are easily damaged during a tire change. Make sure your tire technician is aware of its placement when the tire is on the tire changing machine. The sensors cost almost $100 to replace and are best replaced from the dealer.
